Today’s Hongqiao Road 虹桥路 - wide, modern and traffic-ridden - is quite different from the 1930s, when it was Hungjao Road, “the one and only modern suburb in the city,” the location of wealthy foreigners’ villas. There is a fairly well-know article in the Life magazine on the Hawkings' estate called The Limit, on Hungjao Road. This old outpost of the opulent British living in western Shanghai did not budge even when the Communist soldiers walked into the garden.
